Fun to put Flamingo Park facts together

430 Kanuga Back Then

The current August 2026 issue of Southern Living has an article on classic food products that were and still are uniquely “southern.” 100 of them! Part of the list includes sodas which pleased the southern palate - a lot of lip licking here. And earlier in the issue on page 6 is an article (“Nothing Like a Sun Drop”) specifically about southern old-time sodas: Orange Crush, Sun Drop, Frostie Root Beer, and Grapette. Apparently grape soda/Grapette was a real hit!.....

Which reminded me of another fact I learned when I was doing research of businesses which were in place (and during what years) on Dixie, Belvedere and the 400-500 blocks of Flamingo, Claremore and Kanuga close to Dixie.

430 Kanuga Today

There is a one-story structure at 430 Kanuga Dr. that has housed several businesses, but research in the old city directories at the Mandel Library I found that in 1950 there was a Grapette bottling plant located there. Further research into the Palm Beach Post of August 24, 1947 shows a photo of the building with a notation of “New business opens here....Grapette Bottling Co...” It was sold eventually to Deep Rock Water Co. (a source of bottled water locally for many years).

Coming soon …… more history lurks…..
